Universal Audio's UAD DSP Manley Massive Passive plug-in is UA's Best Seller!
March 12, 2010
Universal Audio in Scotts Valley, Calif., has released the Manley Massive
Passive EQ plug-in ($299) for the UAD-2 platform. The company worked with Manley
Labs on its latest hardware EQ modeling project over a six-month period to bring
UAD-2 users both the standard and mastering versions of this world-renowned EQ
in one package.
The 2-channel, 4-band Manley Massive Passive EQ uses design strengths from
choice console, graphic, parametric and Pultec EQs. The Massive Passive's
natural treatment of a signal lends itself to both radical tonal shaping as well
as delicate vocal shading or subtle mastering enhancement.
"The Massive Passive EQ is one of our best-known products," says
EveAnna Manley, owner of Manley Laboratories Inc. "We didn't even want to
entertain the idea of doing a plug-in unless it was really going to be done
right. Our expectations were high for the plug-in emulation to be spot-on.
Working with Universal Audio, we believe they've totally nailed it."
The Massive Passive EQ offers filter curves, band interdependencies,
distortion and hysteretic behavior for a "unique, very musical and 'open'
sound," according to Universal Audio.

Berners and company co-founder Bill Putnam Jr. compare the hardware
version of the Massive Passive to the software emulation.
"The Massive Passive is truly the ultimate in mastering grade EQs. It
sounds warm without ever being dull; it stays precise while remaining highly
musical," says UAD Powered Plug-Ins Product Manager Will Shanks.
"Manley Labs represents quality, sonic excellence and unequivocal analog
design expertise," says Matt Ward, President of Universal Audio.
"There has always been a special affinity between our companies, and we are
elated to have EveAnna Manley joining us a plug-in partner for the UAD-2
platform."
The Manley Massive Passive EQ plug-in is available as part of the new UAD
Software Version 5.6 release, which also includes the EMT 140 Plate Reverb and
the Precision Enhancer Hz plug-ins, as well as additional performance
enhancements for all UAD-2 users on the Windows platform.
Beta Testers Ryan Hewitt, Dave Collins, and Gene Grimaldi
celebrate the release of the Universal Audio UAD-2 Massive Passive plugin
with Katie Barnes, EveAnna Manley, and Erica McDaniel.

The High Pass Side Chain option is now a STANDARD OPTION on all Mastering Versions or Normal Variable Mu® limiters for no additional charge. This feature adds two switches to the front panel, one for each channel, so that when engaged, the side chain will not respond to frequencies lower than 100Hz. (We standardly use 100Hz as the -3dB point. Other frequencies can be custom ordered.) This HP SC Mod can be used with music with heavy bass lines or bass-heavy mixes where you don't want the bass driving the whole action of the compressor.
The filter is a very gentle 6db per octave 1 pole filter, and will typically be down 1-3db at 100 Hz, and down 4-6db at 50Hz. As you decrease the frequency the amount of limiting will decrease also. At the extreme LF (<20hz) there should be very little gain reduction going on. The whole intent of the filter was to keep very LF stuff (like a heavy kick drum) from activating the compression/limiting so that the overall level didn't duck with every drumbeat.

2009: Manley presents TWO brand new Stingray amplifiers. Both models feature the same classic all-tube signal path that made the classic Stingray so revered with audiophiles around the world for over the last decade. Same beefy and ballsy output transformers, wound in-house at Manley Labs, same tube complement featuring 12AT7 input tubes, 6414 driver tubes, and 8 x super strong Russian EL84. The B+ capacity has been largely increased which results in an even more tighter bottom end. Boom without bloat. Triode to UltraLinear switching is now standard. Flexible routing for recording and subwoofer outputs are provided.
The remote control transmits via RF (Radio Frequency) and IR (Infrared). The RF mode allows transmission through cabinets and through walls -- control your Stingray from anywhere in the house! Inclusion of IR capability allows universal learning remotes to be used with the system.
The Stingray II has four sets of stereo analog inputs. The 4th input is on a stereo 1/8" jack for easy interface with portable devices and computers. The Stingray iTube® has an iPod dock as the 4th audio input which will charge and play your iPod, iPhone, or iTouch device. Track advance, back and volume control can be commanded from the Stingray iTube's remote control. The iPod's video output can be ported to a monitor via the S-Video output. The Stingray iTube® has been licensed from Apple as a Made for iPod approved device.
